Madrid Book Fair
Feria del Libro.

Madrid's Book Fair is held every year at the Retiro Park (Paseo de Coches) and it is open for about two weeks in May-June. With over 300 bookseller stalls you are sure to find the book you are looking for. The Fair was visited by more than 3 million people in 2005.

Día de la Hispanidad (Spain's National Holiday)

October 12, the day Christopher Columbus discovered America, is a national holiday in Spain. In the morning there is a huge military parade along the Paseo de la Castellana which ends up in the Plaza de Cibeles. The parade is presided by the King of Spain in the Plaza de Colón and attended by government officials, military personalities, and thousands of spectators. Those who prefer staying at home and avoid crowds can follow it live on public television (TVE1).

The Vuelta a España

The Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain), is a 3-week cycling race similar to the Tour of France and the Giro de Italia. If you visit Madrid in mid September, you will probably be able to attend the final stage of the Vuelta, and see all the cyclists ride along the Paseo de la Castellana. In 2010 the final stage took place on Sunday, September 19.

La Noche en Blanco

On the night of 23/24 September 2006, Madrid celebrated its first "Noche en Blanco" (White Night) following other European capitals such as Paris, Brussels, and Rome. It consists of a series of free cultural activities that last throughout the whole night until the early hours of the morning. The main museums and attractions remain open and the streets get crowded with hundreds of thousands of people. There are also live concerts, fireworks and light spectacles.

FITUR (Feria Internacional de TURismo)

FITUR, the International Tourism Trade Fair, is held every year on late January and early February at IFEMA's facilities to the northeast of Madrid not far from Barajas Airport. The fair comprises a series of large exhibition halls where different companies and official organizations of the international tourism industry are given a stand that is used as a marketing tool to promote their products.

El Rastro

El Rastro is a flea market located along Ribera de Curtidores and its neighboring streets. It is set up every Sunday in the morning and on public holidays. You can find almost anything at the Rastro, souvenirs, second hand items, furniture, old books, photos, etc. Visitors should beware of pickpockets here.

Nearest metro stations: La Latina and Puerta de Toledo (Line 5).

San Silvestre Vallecana

On 31 December every year, there is 10 kilometer (6.215 miles) road running race through the streets of Madrid. This race is actually divided in two categories, the popular race where anyone can participate, and the international race for elite runners with times below 38 minutes for men and 45 minutes for women. About 25,000 runners participated in the 2007 race.
